Is There Room for the Sacred?

But how do we recreate decency, recreate the sacred amidst our spendthrift splendor? Though she no longer believed in Yahweh, Shulevitz turned to the practice of keeping the Sabbath. Though no longer an observant Jew she and her family began attending synagogue Saturday mornings. The chanting of the familiar words of the Torah buoyed and strengthened her. The rituals moved her bodily as though reenacting them the past clothed her again in the decency of former times, cloaked her and protected her in sacred space. Continue reading
